Calathea plant like being wet at all times and do not like being waterlogged. You should water them when the top inch of soil feels a little dry, every week or so, depending on the humidity and heat of your home. Always apply room temperature, filtered or distilled, water to avoid accumulation of minerals which may destroy leaves. In winter when growth is slow, reduce watering. The trick is to have a balance- neither to get the soil too dry nor to have too much drainage so that the roots rot.

My sister has recently moved into her first apartment and I would like to give her something permanent that will last. I am considering a lucky bamboo plant to get some good fortune and zen. I spotted some very fancy, woven ones at abodelook that appear much higher quality than those at the grocery store. Do you boys believe that a plant is a good congratulations present or should I go with something more practical such as the organizers in the abodelook home essentials line?

Majesty palms are grown in direct sunlight. Have them close to a window where they can get filtered sunlight a few hours a day. They are able to withstand certain types of direct morning sunlight although excessive amounts of harsh sunlight may scald the leaves. When it is low-light, the plant will grow slower and will not be as vivid. Turning the plant is also required to provide even light exposure and even growth on all sides of the plant.
